How to merge PDFs without uploading your files

Combine documents in the right order, check the finished PDF, and know when to use the page organizer instead.

Put several documents in one file

A single PDF is convenient when someone needs a packet of documents in a specific order. LabAnvil's Merge PDF tool joins the pages in your browser, without uploading the document contents to a processing server.

Keep copies of the source files. Combining PDFs produces a new document, and you should review it before sharing it.

Merge PDFs, step by step

  1. Open Merge PDF and choose or drop at least two PDF files.
  2. Arrange the files in the order you want them to appear. Check the first document carefully: it becomes the start of the combined file.
  3. Add any missing PDFs before running the merge.
  4. Select Merge PDFs and download the resulting merged.pdf file.
  5. Open the download and check the page count, document order and the first and last page of each source document.

For example, to assemble a cover letter, report and appendix, add those three PDFs and put them in that order. The merger joins existing pages; it does not rewrite your report or automatically add page numbers.

Need only some of the pages?

Merge PDF works at the file level. If you need to remove a page from one document, rotate a scan or interleave pages from different files, use Organize PDF instead.

You can also extract pages first, then merge the extracted document with another PDF. Choosing the right starting tool saves you from repeatedly downloading and reopening intermediate files.

What to check in the result

The tool copies pages into a new PDF. Review more than the visible text if your documents include interactive features. Document-level bookmarks are not carried over as an assembled outline, and forms need special attention: fields from different files can have conflicting names or behavior.

If a document has signatures, restrictions or features that must remain valid, retain the original and check the output with the software or process you rely on. Seeing the same page on screen does not verify every underlying PDF feature.

For ordinary reports and scans, check that no pages are missing, upside down or in the wrong order. Open the downloaded file itself rather than relying only on the source previews.

Will merging make the files smaller?

Merging and compression are different tasks. Combining several documents should not be treated as a way to meet an email attachment limit.

If the merged document is too large, check whether every page is needed. Use Extract PDF Pages to create a smaller packet with only the requested pages, or Split PDF if the recipient accepts several attachments. Those tools change which pages are included; they do not recompress the images within a page.

Device limits and large files

Browser processing uses your device's memory. A few short documents and a collection of large scans can behave very differently even when the number of files is the same.

If a large merge fails, try a smaller group to identify the troublesome file. A device with more available memory may handle a job that fails on a phone. Keep the page open while the merge runs, and do not assume that closing the tab leaves a background job running.

What “without uploading” means

The selected PDF contents are read and combined by code running in the browser. They are not sent to a LabAnvil PDF-processing server. The website still makes normal requests for its pages and assets; analytics and advertising are covered by the privacy policy.

After reviewing your result, you can split the PDF or organize its pages if you need another version for a different recipient.
