The 2020–2026 BMW S1000RR motorcycles are affected; owners can recognise them by the model name and model years. They were recalled because the ignition lock could wear and lose electrical contact, which can cause the engine to stall and may also disable the brake lamp, turn signals, anti‑lock brake system (ABS) and instrument cluster. BMW Motorrad will notify owners by mail and advise taking the motorcycle to a dealership to update the software; the dealer will inspect and, if necessary, replace the ignition lock.
How to identify it
2020–2026 BMW S1000RR
The hazard
On certain motorcycles, the ignition lock could wear and lose electrical contact. As a result, the engine could stall while riding. This could also cause the brake lamp, turn signals, anti-lock brake system (ABS) and instrument cluster not to work.
A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. A brake lamp or turn signals that don't work may cause a person not to recognize when a rider is braking, intends to turn, or change lanes, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, a loss of ABS function could extend stopping distances, increasing the risk of a crash.
What to do
BMW Motorrad will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your motorcycle to a dealership to update the motorcycle software. The dealer will also inspect and, if necessary, replace the ignition lock.
