2020–2022 GMC SIERRA and SILVERADO and other models recall: powertrain

Certain 2020–2021 GMC Sierra, 2020 GMC Sierra HD, 2020–2022 GMC Silverado, and 2020 GMC Silverado HD vehicles equipped with a diesel engine are affected; check your vehicle by model and year. The recall follows concern that repairs from a prior recall may not have been done correctly, allowing the transmission control valve to wear and lose pressure, which can cause harsh shifts and rear wheels to lock. General Motors will mail owners and instruct them to take the vehicle to a dealership to update the transmission control module software to detect excess wear; if detected, a service engine light and message will appear and the vehicle will be limited to fifth gear.

The hazard

On certain vehicles, the recall repairs completed by a General Motors dealer during recall N242454440 (Transport Canada recall no. 2024-637) may not have been done correctly. As a result, a second repair is required.

Over time, the transmission control valve could wear and lose pressure. If this happens, the transmission could shift harshly and could cause the rear wheels to lock up.

Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with a diesel engine.

Rear wheels that lock suddenly could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

What to do

General Motors will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the transmission control module software to detect excess wear in advance of a wheel lock up. If detected, a service engine light would turn on, a message would display in the instrument panel and the vehicle would be limited to fifth gear.
