Compress Image

Make photos and images smaller for email, websites and upload forms. Compress JPGs by quality, shrink PNGs by reducing their colours, or enter the size a form asks for, such as 20 KB, 50 KB or 100 KB, and the best quality that fits is found for you, all on your own device.

You can also paste an image with Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac).

Your images stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

How to compress an image

  1. Choose or drop your images. JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC all work, in any mix.
  2. Choose a quality (and how many colours to keep for PNGs), or switch to “Target size” and enter the size you need, such as 20 KB or 100 KB.
  3. Select “Compress images”, see how much each file shrank, and download.

Private by design

Most online image tools upload your pictures to their servers. This one doesn’t: Compress Image runs entirely in your browser, so family photos, IDs, screenshots and client work never leave your device. It’s free, with no watermark and no limit on how many images you process, and you don’t need an account.

Questions

How much smaller will my images get?

Phone photos usually shrink by 50–80% with no visible difference. Images that were already compressed hard may shrink only a little, and if compressing would make a file bigger, the original is kept.

What quality should I choose for JPGs?

75 is the sweet spot for most photos: much smaller files that look the same at normal viewing size. Use 85 or more for printing or photos with fine detail, and 60 when size matters most.

How can a PNG be compressed if PNG is lossless?

The saving comes from simplifying the image first: millions of colours become a palette of up to 256, chosen to suit that image, with fine dithering to blend them. Transparency is kept, soft edges included, and the result is still an ordinary PNG. Photos are better as JPG or WebP.

What does “Target size” do?

It tries quality levels until the image fits under the size you give, keeping as much quality as possible, and only reduces the image's dimensions if even a low quality is too big. The result lands a little under the limit, never over it, and a JPG that's already small enough is kept as it is.

Will a photo still look good at 20, 50 or 100 KB?

At the size forms show them, yes. 20 KB holds a clear head-and-shoulders photo or signature of about 300 × 400 pixels, 50 KB about 600 × 600 or a readable scanned page, and 100 KB about 1000 × 1000.

My form also has a size limit in pixels. What should I do?

Resize the image first with Resize Image to the width and height the form asks for, then compress the result here.

What happens to transparent areas with a target size?

The result is a JPG, the format almost every form accepts, so transparent areas, such as around a signature, are filled with white. Choose WebP under Format to keep them, if the site accepts WebP.

Does it remove photo details like the location?

Yes, by default. Removing the date, camera details and location makes files slightly smaller and more private. Tick “Keep photo details” to keep the date and camera; the location is only kept if you ask.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Every tool runs in your web browser, so your images are read, changed and saved on your own device and never sent to LabAnvil or anyone else. Once the page has loaded, the tools even work offline.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Free, with no watermark, no daily limit, no account and no cap on file size beyond what your device's memory can handle.
