How to print calligraphy paper

  1. Choose the x-height to suit your pen or nib.
  2. Pick the proportions and slant for the hand you’re practising.
  3. Download the PDF and print it at 100%, or use it under thin layout paper.

What’s on the page

Each row has four lines: ascender, waistline (the top of the x-height), baseline and descender. The ascender and descender spaces follow the proportions you choose, the waistline and baseline are drawn more strongly than the outer two, and slant lines cross each row at the angle you pick.

Questions

What x-height should I choose?

Match it to your pen. Broad-edged pens are measured in nib widths: an italic x-height is about 5 nib widths, so a 2 mm nib wants a 10 mm x-height. Brush pens and pointed pens for modern calligraphy usually start at 7 to 10 mm.

What do the proportions mean?

They’re the heights of the ascender, x-height and descender. Copperplate’s 3:2:3 makes tall loops above and below small lowercase letters, italic’s 3:5:3 makes a compact, readable hand, and 1:1:1 suits modern and brush lettering.

Which slant angle should I use?

Copperplate is written at 55° from the baseline and Spencerian at about 52°, while italic leans only about 5° from upright. Choose none for upright hands like foundational.

How do I print it at the right size?

Choose “Actual size” or 100% in the print dialog, not “Fit to page”, and load the same paper size as the PDF. Then a 1/4 inch square measures exactly 1/4 inch.

Is it free?

Yes. Every paper is free to make, download and print as often as you like, with no account and no watermark.
