How to print music staff paper
- Choose how many staves you want on each page.
- Keep the short lines that close each end of the staff, or turn them off.
- Set the number of pages, download the PDF and print it at 100%.
What’s on the page
Every staff has five evenly spaced lines, and the space between staves is five times the space between lines. The staves are spread evenly from the top margin to the bottom one.
Questions
How many staves are on standard manuscript paper?
12 staves on a Letter or A4 page is the usual choice for general writing. 10 leaves a little more room between staves for lyrics or chord symbols, and 6 or 8 are easier for children.
How big is each staff?
With 12 staves on Letter paper and half-inch margins, each staff is about 9.9 mm (0.39 inch) from top line to bottom line, a common size for handwritten music. Fewer staves make each one larger.
Can I add a treble or bass clef?
Not yet. The staves are left blank so the same paper works for any instrument and any clef.
How do I print it at the right size?
Choose “Actual size” or 100% in the print dialog, not “Fit to page”, and load the same paper size as the PDF. Then a 1/4 inch square measures exactly 1/4 inch.
Is it free?
Yes. Every paper is free to make, download and print as often as you like, with no account and no watermark.
