Handwriting Paper

Each row has a solid top line, a dashed middle line and a solid baseline, so children can see how tall each letter should be. Pick the row height to match their age, and make the baseline red if you like.

How to print handwriting paper

  1. Choose the row height: 1 inch for kindergarten, smaller as handwriting gets neater.
  2. Turn on the red baseline if your school uses one.
  3. Download the PDF and print as many pages as you need.

What’s on the page

Each row is a solid top line, a dashed midline halfway down and a solid baseline, with a gap of half the row height below it for descenders. The rows are centred between your margins.

Questions

What size handwriting lines for kindergarten?

Rows about 1 inch (25 mm) tall suit kindergarten, 3/4 to 5/8 inch first and second grade, and 1/2 inch or smaller older children whose letters are getting neater.

What is the dashed line for?

It marks the midline. Lowercase letters like a, c and o fill the space between the midline and the baseline, and tall letters like b, d and h reach the top line.

Why is there a gap between rows?

It leaves room for the tails of letters like g, p and y to drop below the baseline without running into the next row. The gap is half the row height.

How do I print it at the right size?

Choose “Actual size” or 100% in the print dialog, not “Fit to page”, and load the same paper size as the PDF. Then a 1/4 inch square measures exactly 1/4 inch.

Is it free?

Yes. Every paper is free to make, download and print as often as you like, with no account and no watermark.
