Cornell Notes Template

The Cornell method splits the page in three: notes on the right, questions and key words in the column on the left, and a short summary at the bottom. This template draws the layout and rules the notes.

How to print a Cornell notes template

  1. Choose the paper size and the line spacing for the notes.
  2. Set how many pages you want: one per lesson or lecture is typical.
  3. Download the PDF and print it, double-sided if you like.

What’s on the page

Inside your margins, a band across the top (10% of the height) holds the topic and date, the cue column takes 30% of the width, and the summary box the bottom 20%. Only the notes area is ruled, so the cue column stays free for questions and diagrams.

Questions

How do I take Cornell notes?

During the lesson, write notes in the large area on the right. Afterwards, write questions and key words in the left column that the notes answer, then sum up the page in a sentence or two at the bottom. To revise, cover the notes and answer the questions.

What are the standard proportions?

The classic layout on Letter paper is a 2 1/2 inch cue column, a 6 inch notes column and a 2 inch summary. This template keeps similar proportions on any paper: the cue column takes 30% of the width inside the margins, and the summary box 20% of the height.

Can I change the line spacing?

Yes. College ruled suits most note takers, wide ruled larger handwriting, and 6 to 10 mm lines match metric notebooks.

How do I print it at the right size?

Choose “Actual size” or 100% in the print dialog, not “Fit to page”, and load the same paper size as the PDF. Then a 1/4 inch square measures exactly 1/4 inch.

Is it free?

Yes. Every paper is free to make, download and print as often as you like, with no account and no watermark.
