How to print lined paper

  1. Choose the line spacing: college ruled for most writing, wide ruled for younger children.
  2. Turn the margin line and the space for a title at the top on or off.
  3. Set the number of pages, download the PDF and print it at 100%.

What’s on the page

Lines run the full width between your margins at the spacing you choose, exactly 9/32 inch (20.25 points) apart for college ruled and 11/32 inch (24.75 points) for wide ruled, below an optional 3/4 inch space at the top for a title or date. The margin line sits 1 1/4 inches from the left edge, as on US notebook paper.

Questions

What line spacing is standard?

College ruled (9/32 inch, 7.1 mm) is the most common in the US, wide ruled (11/32 inch, 8.7 mm) is used in schools for younger writers, and narrow ruled is 1/4 inch (6.4 mm). Outside the US, 8 mm lines are the usual choice.

College ruled or wide ruled?

College ruled suits smaller handwriting and fits about a fifth more lines on a page. Wide ruled gives more room on each line, which is easier for younger children and larger writing; US schools usually use it from around grades 2 to 5, after primary handwriting paper.

How many lines are on a college ruled page?

This one has 33 on a Letter sheet with half-inch margins and a space for a title at the top, or 35 without the title space.

Is wide ruled the same as legal ruled?

Yes, wide ruled paper is sometimes sold as legal ruled. It has nothing to do with legal-size paper, which is 8.5 × 14 inches.

Where does the margin line go?

On US notebook paper it’s 1 1/4 inches from the left edge of the sheet, and that’s where this one goes, in red.

Can I print a whole pad at once?

Yes. Set “Pages” to the number of sheets you want and they all come in one PDF, ready to print double-sided.

How do I print it at the right size?

Choose “Actual size” or 100% in the print dialog, not “Fit to page”, and load the same paper size as the PDF. Then a 1/4 inch square measures exactly 1/4 inch.

Is it free?

Yes. Every paper is free to make, download and print as often as you like, with no account and no watermark.
