Base64 Encode and Decode

Type or paste text to encode it as Base64, or paste Base64 to read what’s inside. Drop a file to encode its bytes, and decoded data that isn’t text can be downloaded as a file.

Runs on your device. Nothing you paste is uploaded.

How to use the Base64 Encode and Decode

  1. Choose Encode or Decode.
  2. Type or paste into the top box, or drop a file onto it. The result updates as you type.
  3. Copy the result, or download it. Tick URL-safe for Base64 that goes in URLs and JWTs.

Private by design

Plenty of online tools send what you paste to their server, which is a real risk with API keys, tokens and customer data. Base64 Encode and Decode runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, logged or stored, and it keeps working with your network switched off. It’s free, with no account and no limits.

Questions

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Base64 only rewrites bytes as 64 printable characters so they survive email, JSON and URLs. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide a password.

What is URL-safe Base64?

The same encoding with - and _ in place of + and /, and usually without the = padding at the end. JWTs and many web APIs use it. The decoder accepts either form.

Why do accented letters and emoji decode as gibberish elsewhere?

Base64 encodes bytes, not letters. This tool encodes text as UTF-8 first, which is what nearly every system expects; some older tools use a single-byte encoding instead, and the two don’t match.

Is anything I paste sent to a server?

No. Every tool runs in your browser, so tokens, keys, customer data and code stay on your device. Once the page has loaded, the tools work offline too.

Do I need an account?

No. Every developer tool is free to use without signing in, with no limits.
