URL Encode and Decode

Encode text so it’s safe inside a URL or query string, or turn %20s and %C3%A9s back into readable text. Paste a whole URL to see its host, path and every query parameter decoded in a table.

Runs on your device. Nothing you paste is uploaded.

How to use the URL Encode and Decode

  1. Choose Encode or Decode.
  2. Paste the text or URL. Pick whether you’re encoding a single value or a whole URL, and whether spaces should become + as in HTML forms.
  3. Copy the result. For a full URL, the table below lists each query parameter decoded.

Private by design

Plenty of online tools send what you paste to their server, which is a real risk with API keys, tokens and customer data. URL Encode and Decode runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, logged or stored, and it keeps working with your network switched off. It’s free, with no account and no limits.

Questions

What’s the difference between encoding a value and a whole URL?

A value, like a search term, has every reserved character encoded, including / ? & and =, so it can’t break the URL around it. A whole URL keeps those characters, because they give the URL its structure, and only encodes spaces and other unsafe characters.

Should a space be %20 or +?

%20 is correct anywhere in a URL. + means a space only in query strings sent by HTML forms (application/x-www-form-urlencoded). The decoder can treat + as a space when you ask it to.

Why did decoding fail?

A % must be followed by two hexadecimal digits, and the bytes have to form valid UTF-8. A lone % or a cut-off sequence like %E2%82 can’t be decoded; the message says where the problem is.

Is anything I paste sent to a server?

No. Every tool runs in your browser, so tokens, keys, customer data and code stay on your device. Once the page has loaded, the tools work offline too.

Do I need an account?

No. Every developer tool is free to use without signing in, with no limits.
