Markdown to Plain Text

Paste Markdown and get the text without the symbols: no #, ** or [link](…) syntax, with lists, tables and links still easy to read. Handy for forms, plain emails, app store listings and word counts.

How to use the Markdown to Plain Text

  1. Paste your Markdown, or drop a .md file onto the box.
  2. Choose how links, lists, tables and line breaks should look in the text.
  3. Copy the plain text or download it as a .txt file. Word and character counts update as you go.

Private by design

Many online converters send your text to their server, which matters for drafts, notes and anything confidential. Markdown to Plain Text runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, logged or stored on a server, and it keeps working with your network switched off. It’s free, with no account and no limits.

Questions

Why not just delete the symbols?

The same symbol means different things in different places: a * can be a bullet, emphasis or a real asterisk, and a table needs its columns lined up once the pipes are gone. This reads the Markdown properly first, so lists, tables and escaped characters come out right.

What happens to links and images?

Links keep their words, with the address in brackets unless you choose “Text only”. Images become their description, and footnotes are numbered at the end.

Do the counts match Word or Google Docs?

Closely. Words are counted the way your browser splits text into words, which also works for Chinese, Japanese and Thai, so totals can differ by a few from a word processor’s.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so drafts, notes and documents stay on your device, and the tools keep working offline once the page has loaded.

Do I need an account?

No. Every Markdown tool is free to use without signing in, with no limits.
