Table of Contents Generator

Paste a README or any Markdown file and get a nested, linked table of contents built from its headings, with anchors made exactly the way GitHub or GitLab makes them.

How to use the Table of Contents Generator

  1. Paste your Markdown, or drop a .md file onto the box.
  2. Choose which heading levels to list, bullets or numbers, and whether the links are for GitHub or GitLab.
  3. Copy the contents, or choose “Document with contents” to get the whole file with the list inserted.

Private by design

Many online converters send your text to their server, which matters for drafts, notes and anything confidential. Table of Contents Generator runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, logged or stored on a server, and it keeps working with your network switched off. It’s free, with no account and no limits.

Questions

Why do links from other generators break on GitHub?

GitHub makes a heading’s anchor by lowercasing it, dropping punctuation and turning spaces into hyphens, then adds -1, -2 to repeated headings. This generator follows those rules exactly, including for accents, emoji and other alphabets.

How do I update the table of contents later?

Paste the document again with “Document with contents” selected. The list sits between <!-- toc --> and <!-- tocstop --> markers, so it’s replaced rather than added twice; they’re the markers VS Code’s Markdown All in One uses too.

Does it work for GitLab?

Yes. Choose GitLab under “Links for”: GitLab joins repeated hyphens into one, so some of its anchors differ from GitHub’s.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so drafts, notes and documents stay on your device, and the tools keep working offline once the page has loaded.

Do I need an account?

No. Every Markdown tool is free to use without signing in, with no limits.
